Ancient Greek helmet from the famous city of Sparta, dated 440 B.C. Sparta or Lacedaemon was a prominent city-state in ancient Greece in south-eastern Peloponnese. Around 650 BC, it rose to become the dominant military land-power in ancient Greece. (more on Spartan Art of War…) Given its military pre-eminence, Sparta was recognized as the overall leader of the combined Greek forces during the Greco-Persian Wars<, the most famous battle of which was the heroic stand at Thermopylae where 300 Spartans and 700 Thespeians fought under the leadership of King Leonidas.
