It is an upright, green plant with fan-shaped sprays of long, narrow, blade-like leaves and woody aerial roots. The plant is sterile, with flowers only growing very rarely. Used in Asian cooking as a basmati fragrance, the leaves can be used fresh, dried or frozen in breads, cakes or just about anything requiring a vanilla-like flavor.
